Disability Rights International is carrying out the Worldwide Campaign to End the Institutionalisation of Children. The aim of the campaign is to change the perception that children are safe in institutions. It is proven that all children, including those with intellectual disabilities thrive best with their families, in their communities with the backing of family support programs.

World First: The LEGO Wheelchair (Video)

So here is a prototype of my latest project, the LEGO Wheelchair which is capable of moving a 90KG person around a room using just LEGO Mindstorms, LEGO Technic and Rotacaster multi-directional wheels. This is still a prototype and under constant development however I really wanted to let people see what I have been up to. My wife giving version 0.8 a test drive below:

FDA Gives Miami Project to Cure Paralysis green light to begin human clinical trial

July 31, 2012The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, a Center of Excellence at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, has received permission from the Food and Drug Administration to begin a revolutionary Phase 1 clinical trial to evaluate the safety of transplanting human Schwann cells to treat patients with recent spinal cord injuries.

Η μασκότ & το πρόγραμμα των Παραολυμπιακών Αγώνων Λονδίνου 2012

Ανακοινώθηκε το πρόγραμμα των αθλημάτων των Παραολυμπιακών Αγώνων του Λονδίνου 2012, που θα διαρκέσουν από τις 29 Αυγούστου έως τις 9 Σεπτεμβρίου. Η οργανωτική επιτροπή των Ολυμπιακών και Παραολυμπιακών Αγώνων είχε εδώ και μήνες παρουσιάσει τις μασκότ των Αγώνων: Ο Wenlock είναι η μασκότ των Ολυμπιακών Αγώνων, ενώ ο Mandeville είναι η μασκότ των Παραολυμπιακών.

European Commission: Launch of the Access City Award 2013

Brussels, 22/05/2012 – The European Commission has opened today the competition for the third “Access City Award”, the European Award for Accessible Cities. The annual prize recognises and celebrates cities that are dedicated to providing an accessible environment for all, and for persons with disabilities in particular. The Award is part of the EU’s wider effort to create a barrier-free Europe: improved accessibility brings lasting economic and social benefits to cities, especially in the context of demographic ageing.

Η νεαρή αθλήτρια Oksana Masters ποζάρει γυμνή με τα ακρωτηριασμένα πόδια της

Η σειρά εκδόσεων Body Issue, του πιο σημαντικού αμερικάνικου αθλητικού καναλιού ESPN, που μόλις βγήκε στην κυκλοφορία, έχει σίγουρα τραβήξει το ενδιαφέρον των φιλάθλων και γενικά του κοινού. Η Oksana Masters είναι ίσως η πιο ενδιαφέρουσα επιλογή γι’ αυτή τη σειρά ημίγυμνων φωτογραφιών, μιας και συμμετέχει στους Παραολυμπιακούς στο άθλημα της κωπηλασίας με ακρωτηριασμένα και τα δύο της πόδια.

Social Integration of Disabled Persons Grants-Call for proposals

The European Commission for development and cooperation – Europe Aid has an open Call for Proposals. The overall objective of this Call for Proposals is to ensure equal access to goods, services and all aspects of life, to people with disabilities.
The specific objective is to strengthen capacities of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) of persons with disabilities and of CSOs defending the rights of persons with disabilities and to enhance the dialogue between the General Directorate on Services to Disabled Persons and Seniors and the CSOs in the realm of disability.

Enzyme and graft combo restores lung function after spinal injury

Until the last few decades, it was generally thought that damage to the spinal cord was permanent, as the nerves within our vertebrae stubbornly resist regrowing severed connections after injuries. But a number of studies have helped us understand why exactly it is that the nerves refuse to grow, raising the prospect that we could use this knowledge to intervene and help repair damage to the spine. In the latest indication that progress is being made in these efforts, researchers have used a combination of enzyme treatments and grafts to restore breathing activity in rats that had had their spinal connections completely severed.

Guide to Gender Mainstreaming in Public Disability Policies

The Guide to Mainstreaming Gender in Public Disability Policies seeks to explore how to effectively include women and girls with disabilities in different areas of life, often overlooked in public policies, and to offer guidance to policy makers and third-sector activists on the topic. The main threads throughout the guide are two benchmark United Nations treaties: CEDAW and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), in addition to the 2nd Manifesto on the Rights of Women and Girls with Disabilities in the European Union – A toolkit for activists and policymakers, adopted by the General Assembly of the European Disability Forum in May 2011.
